Today I learned that Mark Rose had passed away and the news immediately flooded my head with so many childhood memories that I'm sure are shared with "The Boys of Summer" that grew-up in Mt.Pleasant during the early to mid-70's.
The Rose family was just a part of sports as you grew up playing Little League and on into the Babe Ruth where you gained the privilage of playing at the "Big" field in McMillian Park. As a little leaguer you might get lucky and play for Lloyd Rose's team and actually be teammates with Davey and Mark but I never got that opportunity. However, the Rose family didn't care which team you played for they always seemed to be your friend and wanted you to succeed. I remember watching Dave play on my brother Marty's little league team whose games were held at the IWC field accross from the gym and it seemed like he always hit a home run.
In those days, if there was a game being played at McMillian Park someone from the Rose family was there. They loved baseball and wanted you to love it as well. Lloyd's passion for sports was evident in his family but even more so was his sportsmanship. Mike, Dave and Mark possessed the same sportmanship and respect as their father.
The Rose boys may not have been the best players on the field but they played with more heart and passion than anyone else.
As Mark now joins Lloyd and Davey I can see Lloyd with a bat in one hand and a ball in the other hitting grounders to the two of them and shouting "get 2, get 2.
