Merle Raymond Steward
Merle Raymond Steward, 80, New London, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Private family inurnment will be in Burge Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the chapel with the family greeting friends for one hour prior to the service. A memorial has been established to Great River Hospice.
He was born south of New London on Dec. 3, 1932, the son of Carroll Clark and Opal Irene McGraw Steward. On April 16, 1957, he married Lila Farnsworth. They later divorced.
He enlisted in the Navy at the Great Lakes Training Center and was transferred to Norfolk, Va. where he served on the USS Rock Ridge Troup Carrier until 1952. He worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Burlington until 1960. From 1960 to 1982 he was superintendent for the New London Utilities. He then ran the water plant in Edina, Mo. for three years, and finished his career as the street superintendent in Winfield, retiring in 1994. He was a 1949 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and of the Christian faith. He enjoyed watching hummingbirds, reading, watching Tiger Woods play golf and spending time with his sister, Carol.
Heis survived by one son, David (Donni Karczmarczyk) Steward of Ft. Madison; two brothers, Ron Steward of Dodgeville, and Gary Steward of Mt. Pleasant; six sisters, Charlotte Vigue of Louiston, Idaho, Carol Keck of New London, Connie Palmer of Andalusia, Ill., Nancy Steward of Fairfield, Sharon Vaughn of Mt. Pleasant, and Susan Steward of Golden, Ill.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Douglas; three sisters, Annamae, Sandra, and one in infancy.
