Merritt W. Martin
Merritt W. Martin, 62, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
A graveside funeral service for Merritt Martin will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 13th at the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Herbert G. Shafer, Senior Pastor, First United Methodist Church, will officiate. A luncheon will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Friday, April 12 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 4-7 PM Friday Evening.
Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Henry County Conservation Commission or the Infusion Therapy Dept. of Henry County Health Center.
Merritt Warren Martin was born June 28, 1950 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Herman Luther and Edith Evelyn (nee Barr) Martin. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1968. Merritt attended Iowa Wesleyan College where he was a Business Major/Religion Minor and then Colorado State University, Ft. Collins. CO. On June 18, 1971 at the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Merritt was united in marriage to Nadine Louise Peterson.
Merritt worked at his father’s service station, Martin Deep Rock on West Washington Street, Schaffer Motors, McWhirter’s car dealership, Christner Motors and Scientific Applications, all in Mt. Pleasant.. He then became a purchasing agent for Mt. Pleasant Tool and later Design Engineering. Merritt then worked as a foreman at Shop Services, where he worked on restoring a steam locomotive for Michael Jackson. Merritt then started his own business, Martin Yard Art. Martin Yard Art was the job he loved the most. He loved being outdoors and working hard to make his customers happy and their yards beautiful. He received the Best Lawn Service Award on numerous occasions. Over the past 20 years, his customers were very loyal to him. In his spare time, Merritt enjoyed watching NASCAR races, and his favorite drivers were Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.
Those thankful for sharing in Merritt’s life include his wife of over 40 years, Nadine; a daughter and her husband, Angie and Ben Withers of Waverly, IA; a son, Seth Martin of Coralville, IA; three grandsons – Cody and Tyler Wildman and Jackson Withers, all of Waverly; a sister and her husband, Marlene and Rich Deck of Sugar Grove, IL; an uncle, Derrald J. Martin of Mt. Pleasant, a nephew and his wife, Pat and Tracy Deck of Victoria, MN; a niece, Danielle Deck of Aurora, IL; his father and mother-in-law, Vern & Gwen Peterson of Mt. Pleasant and a brother-in-law, Darrel Peterson of Mt. Pleasant.
His parents, step-mother Mildred Shivley Martin and an infant daughter, Christine Louise Martin, precede Merritt in death.
