Moothart, relievers combine to shut down L-M in Panthers' 6-1 triumph
LETTS — Brent Broeker’s Mt. Pleasant baseball team parlayed eight free passes and a pair of Louisa-Muscatine errors into a 6-1 non-conference victory Wednesday night.
While the Panthers were capitalizing on “freebies” from the Falcons, the Panther mound corps of Marcus Moothart, Brady Anderson and Carson Remick kept the L-M bats silent. The trio combined to five up just three hits and an unearned run while walking two and striking out five.
Moothart went the first five innings, allowing all three Falcon hits. He walked two and struck out three. Remick fanned two in a hitless inning of relief.
With four runs in the first inning, Mt. Pleasant never was seriously threatened in the contest. When the hosts finally did dent the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers responded with two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Led by Austin Smith’s three stolen bases, Mt. Pleasant picked up six swipes. Pat Canby stole two bases and Justin Chalupa one.
At the plate, the Panthers came up with four singles — two from Chalupa and one each from Canby and Smith, the first three hitters in the lineup.
Wednesday night’s win moves the Panthers to 15-13 on the season.
