MP bowling teams sweep rival Keokuk
KEOKUK — Season high totals gave the Mt. Pleasant bowling teams a pair of wins against rival Keokuk on Monday night.
“I was very proud of the Panther bowling squad as a whole,” Coach Troy Mears said. “The varsity boys seemed to bowl with more enthusiasm, especially in the Baker games, and they finally put it all together and proved just how capable they are of rolling high scores.
“The varsity girls really stepped-up to the plate,” he added. “(They) rolled extremely well as they knocked off their biggest rival on Keokuk’s home turf.”
The Panther girls defeated the defending state champions by a score of 2,597-2,474, led by Tasha Glover’s two-game total of 383. She rolled scores of 221 and 162.
“Their 2,597 score is one of the highest scores rolled by a Class 1A team statewide this season,” Mears said. “Scores like that would put them in the running for a state title bid if they can keep it up into the postseason.”
Glover was followed by Rachel Wesely (370), Chelsea Sammons (339), Steph Ford (330), Tori Roe (318) and Maddie Kirchner (253).
The team is now 8-0 on the season.
On the boys’ side of the meet, the Panthers scored a team total of 2,992 to Keokuk’s 2,745.
Mt. Pleasant was led by Brock Palar’s scores of 258 and 222 for a total of 480.
“Brock Palar rolled very good scores again today and he has really stepped up and bowled extremely well the last couple meets,” Mears said. “Daniel Ruth also had a great day. Hopefully this will give the boys confidence enough to keep rolling high scores for the rest of the year and into the postseason.”
Palar was followed by Daniel Ruth (447), Spencer Kirby (373), Ryan Francy (359), Dustin Higginbotham (356) and Kasey Kirby (355).
The Panthers upped their record to 6-2 with the win.
The teams will bowl again on Thursday at Ottumwa, starting at 2:30 p.m.
