MP boys fall to Demons in openerPanther girls’ golf team wins Keokuk Invite, Mabeus earns medalist honors
Mt. Pleasant boys’ golf fell to Washington, 166-172, in its season and home opener last night.
The Panthers were led by Kiley Miller with a score of 40, and Kyle Kauffman scored 41 for Mt. Pleasant.
Jordon Phomsouvandara carded a 45 and William Kinney scored 46 for Mt. Pleasant to round out the varsity score.
Sam Van De Berg (47) and Jeff Cox (48) also played varsity for Mt. Pleasant.
Medalist honors went to Washington’s Derek Anding, who shot a 37 on the par-36 course at Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ golf team went to the Keokuk Invite, and the Panthers placed first in the six-team tournament with a score of 374.
They beat Burlington (399), Washington (437), Fairfield (451), Keokuk (495) and Holy Trinity (525).
Mt. Pleasant’s Courtney Mabeus earned medalist honors with a score of 88 on the 18-hole course, shooting a score of 40 in the first round and then carding a 48 on the last nine holes.
The runner-up medalist was Panther Brianne Holtkamp with a score of 93 (48, 45). Elle Schleisman was fourth with two rounds of 48 for an 18-hole total of 96, and Emily Cox scored 97 (49, 48) to tie for fifth overall.
Haley Booton and Hailey Spence also played for Mt. Pleasant, scoring 100 and 128, respectively.
“It was a total team victory,” Coach Jim Kelly said. “Led by Courtney’s outstanding medalist score of 88, we had four girls medal in the top five positions of the tournament. Out of the 12 nine-hole rounds our girls played, we had nine rounds shot in the 40s, which is very good this early in the season.”
The teams golf again Monday; the girls play at Muscatine, while the boys host Keokuk.
