MP girls’ soccer records second shutout
OTTUMWA — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ soccer team traveled to Ottumwa on Thursday and came out on top of the match with a 4-0 score, its second shutout in as many games this season.
“Holly Long had another excellent game,” Coach Ed Chabal said.
Long started the scoring in the 15th minute. Sarah Van Dorin added the second goal in the 35th minute on a putback in front of the Ottumwa goal.
The score remained 2-0 at half, but Panther Amber Hainline had her first goal of the season five minutes into the second half, and Long finished the scoring in the 55th minute. Long also had one assist on the night, and a second assist came from Samentha Phommachack.
“It was another strong performance by the defense in recording their second straight shutout in two games,” Chabal said.
Keeper Lauren Hillman had nine saves to preserve the shutout.
“The midfield continues to control possession of the ball, led by Linzie Hood, Madison Pullis and Amber Hainline,” Chabal said.
The JV team had its first match of the year, and after giving up two goals in the first half, played a solid second half. They ended up falling by a 2-0 score.
The varsity is now 2-0 on the season and will host Southeast Conference opponent Fairfield Monday in a varsity/JV match at 4:30 p.m. at East Lake Park.
