MP girls’ soccer squeaks by HTC for home win
The rain cancelled most area sporting events yesterday, but it couldn’t stop the Mt. Pleasant soccer teams.
The girls defeated Holy Trinity Catholic, 1-0, through intermittent showers on the muddy field at East Lake Park.
The boys’ match was moved from Burlington High School to the RecPlex, but the teams still played. Mt. Pleasant fell to the Grayhounds, 3-1, in the nonconference contest.
In the girls’ home match, the teams were scoreless at halftime.
Lauren Ralls changed that when she found the back of the net with 36 minutes remaining in the second half. It was her fourth goal this week — she scored three against Ft. Madison on Monday. She was once again assisted by Megan Myers.
Ralls’ second-half goal was the only damage either team would do in last night’s match. The Panthers finished with six shots, two each from Ralls and Myers.
Tiffany Liechty made five saves in goal for the Panthers.
Mt. Pleasant is now 2-4 on the season and remains 1-1 in the Southeast Conference.
They play again Monday when they host Washington at East Lake Park, starting at 4:30 p.m.
In the boys’ match, the Panthers lone goal came from Jack Pieper, assisted by Yiannis Steryiannis.
The Panthers got off just one other shot on goal in the game.
Alex Le made five saves in goal for the Panthers, who are now 2-3 on the season. They remain 1-1 in the conference.
They look to improve their SEC record tonight (Friday) against Fairfield, in a match that was rescheduled from April 14.
The Mt. Pleasant boys will host the Trojans at East Lake Park, starting at 4:30 p.m.
