FT. MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ cross-country team took the top spot at the Ft. Madison Invitational on Thursday, with three runners finishing in the top four and all five scorers in the top 11.

The Panthers were led by runner-up Ellie Conrad, who finished the 4K race in 18:13, just over a second behind the winner, Kaylee Alvarez of Ft. Madison.

Right behind Conrad was Beth Wells, who took third place overall of 41 runners with a time of 18:29, and Chloe Haffarnan was fourth in 18:36.

The Panthers’ other two scorers were Natalie Ita in 10th at 19:05 and Emma Ludwig in 19:08.

Mt. Pleasant won with 30 points, beating second-place Ft. Madison by 17.

Also running varsity for Mt. Pleasant was Hannah Weber (14th, 19:57) and Lindsey Moeller (22nd, 20:41).

“It was a hot meet, but our pack attack worked,” Coach Jean Caboth said. “We still need to strengthen our middle runners, but we are getting a lot of progress out of our freshmen (Moeller and Jenna Ludwig), and they are alternating at seventh runner.

“Hannah Weber ran a good race for a recovery run, and her knee held up fine,” Caboth continued. “It was a really nice effort again, and we are continuing to beat a state ranked team: Ft. Madison.”

The boys’ race was also a close one, as Mt. Pleasant freshman Logan Murray was the runner-up by just two seconds, finishing the 5K in 16:50.

Burlington’s Jacob Huber won in 16:48, and the Grayhounds topped Mt. Pleasant in the team totals as well.

Mt. Pleasant took second with 49 points, and Burlington won with 21.

Running second for Mt. Pleasant was Jack Pieper, who was eighth of 40 runners in 18:23. He was followed by Adam Bodenham, who took 11th in 18:40, and Josh Beelman, who was 12th in 18:45.

Rounding out the Panther scoring was Dalton Krum, who took 16th in 19:24.

Ryan Hutchinson was 17th in 19:36, and Ben Zihlman was 25th in 20:29.

Next up for the Panthers is their home meet at McMillan Park on Tuesday, starting at 4:45 p.m.
