MP JV plays Fairfield
Both of the Mt. Pleasant JV basketball teams, along with the freshman girls’ team, played against Fairfield over the weekend.
The JV teams each took a loss — the boys were bested by Fairfield, 37-35, in a home game while the girls fell by a score of 56-45 on the road.
The freshman girls’ team won its road game against the Trojans, 39-36, in overtime.
In the boys’ JV game, Spencer White scored 16 points and Nathan McConnell had six. McConnell, White, and Keegan Pullis all had five rebounds. White and McConnell also had two steals each.
“Fairfield’s defense had us out of whack and we weren’t able to make the adjustments we needed to win the game,” Coach Tyler Rodgers said. “The kids made some good plays on defense and scored to tie it, but we couldn’t grab the lead.”
In the JV girls’ game, Bailey Johnson put up 10 points and Carolyn Lutovsky contributed nine. Ally Davis and Sarah Moffett scored seven and six points, respectively.
The Panther girls’ JV team also won a game over the weekend when they took down Mediapolis by a score of 34-26.
Lutovsky was the team’s leading scorer in the victory with 10 points. Moffett added six and Johnson scored five. Megan Shumaker and Jade Kennedy posted four points apiece.
In the freshman girls’ game against Fairfield, the Panthers avenged a home loss to the Trojans earlier this season with an overtime victory in Fairfield.
The host team was leading 17-15 at halftime, but Mt. Pleasant came back to tie the score at 34-34 in the last 20 seconds of regulation. The Panthers had the advantage in the extra period and held on to claim the win.
Abbie Liechty paced the Panthers with 11 points and Brianna Shelman added 10. Johnson and Rylee Amos scored six points each, while Genna Cristoforo chipped in five. Cali Liechty scored one points.
Abbie Liechty also led Mt. Pleasant with eight rebounds, seven of them offensive. Johnson pulled down four boards. The Panthers had 30 rebounds as a team.
Mt. Pleasant will travel to Keokuk on Friday, where the JV teams will play their next games.
The next freshman girls’ game will be Tuesday against Eddyville-Blakesburg.
