MP, NL players receive all-district softball honors
One Mt. Pleasant softball player and three from New London have received all-district honors from the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association.
Sammi Goble of Mt. Pleasant was named to the Class 4A all-Southeast District team, while Morgan Christner, Emily Parks and Caitlin Chiri received the honor in Class 1A.
Goble, a senior, was a five-time letterwinner for Mt. Pleasant. She led the Panthers with a .403 batting average and .597 slugging percentage. She was second in on-base percentage at .432.
The Mt. Pleasant shortstop had a team-high 11 doubles on the season and smashed six triples, and she will continue her softball career at Quincy University next season.
Christner, Parks and Chiri each played a big role in getting the Tigers not only to the state tournament this season, but to the state championship game.
Christner went 31-9 on the mound for the team this season, striking out 379 batters, the second-highest total in the state. She had an ERA of just 1.34 in just over 250 innings pitched.
She was also a big asset at the plate, leading the team with 21 doubles on the year and a slugging percentage of .614. She and Parks each knocked in 41 runs. The pair also led the Tigers with the fewest strikeouts of any player in the regular lineup — each went down on strikes just nine times this season.
Parks also had a team-high batting average of .447 and stole 30 bases — more than any other Tiger.
Finally, Chiri was New London’s lone senior this season; she hit .310 and was second on the team with 11 doubles. She had a team-high seven sacrifices. The second baseman also scored 30 runs and knocked in 24. She will continue her athletic career with the University of Dubuque volleyball team this fall.
