MP soccer splits with Centerville
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ soccer team evened its season record Tuesday with a 1-0, overtime win over Centerville at East Lake Park.
Zoom Gwamna made his only shot on goal with 46.3 seconds left in the first overtime period of last night’s match to give the Panthers the win. Gwamna was assisted by Josh Stott and Yiannis Steryiannis.
It was the Panthers’ first goal of the season — and it was only a matter of time before one went in.
“We had opportunities to score in regulation,” Coach Neil Schmitz said.
Noah Brown successfully defended the Mt. Pleasant goal for the duration of the match, holding Centerville scoreless while making four saves on the night for his first shutout of the season.
He had help from the defense, led by Austin Smith, Stott, Nike Phillips and Alex Le.
The Panthers are now 1-1 on the season after opening their season with a 4-0 loss at Iowa City Regina last week.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team also hosted Centerville last night, opening its season with a 1-0 loss.
The Panthers took five shots on goal in the nonconference match, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Tiffany Liechty made two saves in for Mt. Pleasant.
The Mt. Pleasant girls will be back on the field Thursday when they host Ottumwa at East Lake Park.
Both teams then play their Southeast Conference opener against Fairfield on Monday. The boys host the Trojans, and the girls play their first road game at Fairfield.
