MP softball comes up short in doubleheader against Keokuk

By Ashlee De Wit | Jun 14, 2013

In each game they scored six runs, and in each game it was all they needed.

The Keokuk softball team swept Mt. Pleasant in an Southeast Conference doubleheader at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday, 6-4 and 6-2.

The Panthers (7-13, 1-7) had 10 hits in the first game and 12 in the second, but couldn’t translate those hits to runs.

Leslie Taylor led the Panthers at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Sammi Goble was 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs knocked in.

Mt. Pleasant scored its first run in the first frame and added another in the second, but Keokuk came back in the middle innings to take the lead.

The Panthers rallied in the seventh with two runs scored on three straight hits by Allison Buckert, Taylor and Goble, but ultimately came up short.

Stukerjurgen started on the mound in game one; she gave up six hits for six runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings. She walked four batters and struck out six.

Seven fielding errors hurt the Panthers’ cause in the opener, essentially giving Keokuk the game — errors accounted for five unearned runs in the contest.

Goble was the starter in game two; she gave up six hits for six runs (four earned), walked three and struck out two in five innings.

Cali Liechty pitched in relief in both contests. She held Keokuk scoreless, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out three batters in a combined 3 2/3 innings over the two games.

Five different Panthers had a pair of hits each in game two, including Goble, who had a run scored and the only RBI.

The Panthers put both of their runs on the board in the third inning, when Taylor singled, Goble knocked her in, and then Goble scored on a Keokuk overthrow.

The Panthers had a few scattered hits after that inning, but couldn’t manufacture another run.

Meanwhile, Keokuk responded with a five-run fourth inning, which would prove to be more than they needed for the win. They tacked on one more insurance run in the sixth to secure the sweep.

Next up for Mt. Pleasant is a trip to Ft. Madison on Monday for another SEC twinbill, starting at 5:30 p.m.
