MP softball tops Wapello
WAPELLO — The Mt. Pleasant softball team put four runs on the board early and four runs on the board late to claim an 8-6, nonconference win over Wapello on Wednesday night.
The Panthers scored three runs in the first frame of their only away game this week, as Sammi Goble tripled to bring in Hattie Liechty and Leslie Taylor — each of whom had singled earlier in the inning — and a Sarah Moffett double scored Goble.
They added another run in the second when Ali Dorn singled, advanced to second and then third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Allison Buckert.
Wapello also scored a few runs early, putting up one in the first, four in the second to take the lead, and one more in the third. Then the Panthers brought in pitcher Cali Liechty, who shut the Arrows down. She went four innings, allowing just two hits and one walk and striking out four.
The Panther batters took advantage of Wapello’s pitching and fielding struggles to tie the score in the fifth. Taylor walked, Goble reached on an error, Morgan Fraise reached on an error, and both Moffett and Dorn also walked.
They took the lead in the sixth when Buckert walked, stole second and scored on a double by Goble, and added an insurance run when a Fraise groundout brought Goble home.
On the day, Hattie Liechty, Goble, Fraise and Moffett had two hits each, including two doubles from Moffett and a double and triple from Goble.
Other hits came from Buckert, Taylor, Dorn and Bailey Johnson.
Buckert and Moffett each stole a base.
Goble scored three runs and Taylor scored twice; Goble also knocked in three.
Johnson started the game on the mound. She gave up just two hits in three innings, walked one batter and allowed six runs (three earned). She struck out four.
The Panthers are now 7-11 on the season and remain 1-5 in the Southeast Conference.
They look to up that SEC record tonight when they host Keokuk in a doubleheader at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex, starting at 5:30 p.m.
