MP XC meets tough competition at Centerville
CENTERVILLE — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ cross-country team took second to Class 3A No. 10 Oskaloosa at Centerville on Tuesday, led by Ellie Conrad’s sixth-place finish.
The boys’ team placed fourth in a field of 13 teams, including some tough competition. Logan Murray led the Panthers with a fifth-place finish.
On the girls’ side, Mt. Pleasant scored 63 points to finish as the runner-up in a 12-team field. Oskaloosa scored 55 for the win.
“Our varsity ran very well,” Coach Jean Caboth said. “Osky is a ranked team and we wanted to see how close we could get to them — we got really close!”
The Panthers came in ahead of Ft. Madison (101), Davis County (109) Ottumwa (119), Kirksville (163), Centerville (208), Albia (240), Knoxville (273), Chariton (274), Wayne (305) and Keokuk (350).
Conrad ran a time of 16:33 to cross the line first for Mt. Pleasant. Beth Wells was right behind her in seventh place overall, completing the course in 16:46.
Hannah Weber placed 11th in 17:06.
“Hannah Weber is coming on — she jumped to third in our lineup and looked like the runner of two years ago, when she qualified for the state meet,” Caboth said.

Emma Ludwig finished 21st with a time of 17:36 and Megan Shumaker was 47th in 19:40.
“Ellie (Conrad) and Beth (Wells) continued their steady runs, and Chloe (Haffarnan) held up the middle of the lineup for us,” Caboth said. “I was very proud of them.”
On the boys’ side, Murray completed the course in 17:32, followed by Jack Pieper in 13th place with a time of 18:16.
Josh Beelman crossed the line in 18:42 to take 21st, and Ryan Hutchinson was 23rd in 18:47.

The Panthers scored 86 points to finish behind winner Ft. Madison (69), Albia (78) and Oskaloosa (80).
“The team had a battle with some good teams,” Coach Mitch Anderson said. “Albia and Oskaloosa were ranked and we were within a few points of both. Logan (Murray) wasn’t full strength and still ran a tough race for the team. Jack (Pieper) had a great run after being out for a little while. Josh (Beelman), Ryan (Hutchinson) and Adam (Bodenham) were very close together and are improving every meet.
Mt. Pleasant finished ahead of Ottumwa (99), Davis County (125), Knoxville (168), Centerville (268), Kirksville (278), Keokuk (303), Clarke (315), Chariton (316) and Eddysville (378).
