MPHS students collect items to send to soldiers
Mt. Pleasant High School students are seeking donations to put in care packages to be sent to soldiers of the 833 Engineer Company during their deployment to Afghanistan.
Care package items will be collected through March 18. Items can be dropped off with Mrs. Pforts or at the office.
Some items requested are individually-wrapped cookies, beef jerky, granola bars, individually-wrapped licorice, ramen noodles, cereal bars, soup mix, air fresheners, canned air to blow dust out of electronics, wet wipes, DVDs, batteries and stress relief squeeze balls.
Students and teachers will help pack the boxes and get them ready to be sent overseas. The care packages will be sent to the unit’s First Sargent in order to be shared among the soldiers.
The packages will be sent over the course of the deployment. When the 832 deployed, the students gathered enough donations to send three large flat rate boxes each month for six months. They are hoping to be able to do the same for the 833.
To raise money for shipping costs, the students are planning a day for students to pay one dollar in order to wear a hat during school.
This is the third deployment for the 833 since first deploying with the Mt. Pleasant unit in 2005.
