Mt. Pleasant baseballers split pair with Keokuk, win in tournament

Mt. Pleasant divided a pair of Southeast Conference baseball games with Keokuk Friday night, winning 5-4 and then dropping an 8-5 tussle to the Purple Chiefs.

Brent Broeker’s team stepped out of conference play Saturday, edging Waterloo Columbus, 9-5, in the first round of the four-team Waterloo Baseball Tournament. The championship game was rained out.

In the win over Keokuk, the Panthers hit the hosts with a four-spot in the first and then weathered Purple Chiefs’ rally in the bottom of the seventh that saw the hosts pull within a run.

Austin Smith spearheaded the Panthers’ sticks with a double and single. Carson Remick and Tyler Pace each singled twice while Dustin Amos and Colton Schinstock had singles.

Brady Anderson collected the mound win, striking out two over six innings pitched. Remick notched a save, striking out two of the four hitters he faced while extinguishing Keokuk’s seventh-inning rally.

In the loss at Keokuk, MP was unable to combat the winners’ five-run third. Mt. Pleasant sprinted to a 4-2 lead after two innings but would score just once more, putting up a run in the sixth inning.

Pat Canby had a double and single for the Panthers. Smith ripped a pair of singles while Remick had a triple and Colton Schinstock doubled. Trey Magnani’s single was the other Panther hit.

Amos threw a complete game, giving up seven hits and walking five.

Jordan Meyer and Carson Remick combined to shut down Waterloo Coloumbus. Meyer twirled the first six innings, striking out four while permitting eight hits. Remick finished, getting the final three outs.

At the plate, Canby had a double and two singles, Smith drove in three runs with two singles. Others with extra-base hits were Amos and Magnani, each stroking doubles.

Justin Dilks managed a pair of hits while Remick and Justin Chalupa also singled. Mt. Pleasant had 11 hits off three Sailor pitchers.
