Mt. Pleasant boys defeat Ft. Madison
FT. MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant boys’ tennis team opened its season with a road win Monday, taking down Ft. Madison by a score of 7-2.
“We played well for our first matches of the year,” Coach Tyler Rodgers said. “We had to make adjustments for the wind, but we figured it out.”
The Panthers got five of their wins in singles play.
Zach Schmitz defeated Wes Bernhardt in the No. 1 singles match (6-1, 6-2), and Blake Wickham won the No. 3 singles match against Jarrett Lightfoot (6-4, 6-3).
Colton Schinstock topped Clayton Poe (7-5, 6-2), and Tyler Pace defeated Dante Senney (6-1, 6-1). Austin Meyer won against Johnathan Hernandez (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles play, the team of Schmitz and Pace and the team of Schinstock and Meyer each picked up a win for the Panthers.
Ft. Madison got a win in the No. 2 singles match between Mt. Pleasant’s Matt Zihlman and the Bloodhounds’ Drake Hogan, and also won a doubles match by forfeit.
“Matt (Zihlman) got sick during doubles; we were up 3-0 when he left,” Rodgers said.
The Panthers play again Thursday when they travel to Davis County.
