Mt. Pleasant boys fall short in season opener
CEDAR RAPIDS — Dalton Conrad led the Mt. Pleasant boys’ basketball team with 17 points, but the Panthers ultimately fell short in their season opener at Cedar Rapids Xavier on Monday night, 60-48.
Conrad went seven-for-12 from the field on the night, including three-for-five from behind the arc, and the Panthers took an eight-point lead into halftime, 26-18.
But Xavier turned up the heat in the second half, tying the score by the end of the third quarter at 36 and going on a 24-12 run in the fourth to claim the win.
Mt. Pleasant shot 34.7 percent (17-for-49) from the field on the night, and Xavier shot 47.5 percent (19-for-40).
The Saints also got to the line more than the Panthers, sinking 20 of 33 free throws, while Mt. Pleasant made six of their 13 shots from the line.
Trey Magnani contributed eight points on the night for the Panthers, while Ryan Hanna and Logan Mulford each had seven. Magnani and Mulford were each two-for-six from the three-point line.
Xavier won the rebounding battle handily, 28-16.
Mulford had four boards for Mt. Pleasant; Hanna and Brant Shelman each had three.
Cameron Frank dished four assists, and Hanna had two blocks. Shelman grabbed two steals for Mt. Pleasant, and four other Panthers had one steal each.
Mt. Pleasant plays again on Friday in its home and Southeast Conference opener against Fairfield, starting with the freshman game at 4:45 p.m.
The Panther girls’ basketball team is at Fairfield on Friday night for its conference opener.
Both Mt. Pleasant teams then have a quick turnaround as they face Pella on Saturday: the boys’ team travels to Pella and the girls host the Dutch.
