Mt. Pleasant freshmen suffer first football loss
The Mt. Pleasant freshman football team suffered its first loss in a Panther uniform when they dropped an 18-16 decision to Solon on Friday.
The team went undefeated in its seventh- and eighth-grade football seasons, and won its first two games this season as well.
Mt. Pleasant took a 16-0 lead to start Friday’s game, as Pat Canby ran for a 60-yard touchdown on his way to 137 rushing yards on the night, and Brock Wilson completed a pass to Canby for a 79-yard touchdown. Dshundric Foster and Canby each ran for a two-point conversion.
However, the Panthers let Solon back in the game before halftime, as the Spartans scored two touchdowns of their own to cut the Mt. Pleasant lead to just 16-12 at the break.
The Spartans were able to hold their hosts scoreless in the second half while getting into the end zone one more time for the win.
“It was a tough loss but a fixable loss,” Coach Kirby Booton said. “We made too many mistakes — things we can learn from.”
They are now 2-1 on the season and will play at Ft. Madison on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
