Mt. Pleasant girls defeat Washington, fall to Cedar Rapids Prairie
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend, coming up with a 61-51, Southeast Conference win over Washington on Friday night but falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie, 54-38, at the US Cellular Center on Saturday.
The Panthers had a big fourth quarter against the Demons, scoring 21 points to seal the win and finish the first half of the conference season with a perfect record.
Mt. Pleasant is now 4-0 in the SEC and 7-3 overall this season.
After the first eight minutes in Washington, Mt. Pleasant led the Demons 16-11, but the Panthers managed just seven more points before halftime and went into the break trailing 26-23.
They gained a little ground in the third quarter and went into the final quarter down just one point — and then posted the biggest quarter of the night to claim the victory.
The Panthers sank 17 of their 22 free throws in the game, including a few down the stretch.
The victory was the first win over Washington for the Mt. Pleasant seniors since their seventh-grade season.
Hannah Becker paced the Panther with 14 points while Kelsi Phipps and Natalie Myers put up 10 points each.
Taryne Shull pulled down 10 rebounds.
Natalie Ita dished out four assists; Ita and Mary Wester each had a steal. Phipps blocked two shots.
In Saturday’s game, Mt. Pleasant was outscored 20-8 in the first quarter and never could erase the early deficit.
Shull and Phipps scored 11 points each to lead the Panthers. Wester and Becker had five points apiece.
Shull grabbed six boards and Phipps had five rebounds.
Shull and Ita dished out three assists each, while Becker had three steals. Phipps and Ita had two thefts each.
Ita blocked a shot.
Next up for Mt. Pleasant is a trip to Fairfield for another conference matchup on Friday. The Panthers will then host Mediapolis on Saturday — it will be their third of five straight weekends with Friday-Saturday games.
