Mt. Pleasant perfect at Burlington Tournament
BURLINGTON — The Mt. Pleasant volleyball team won the Burlington Tournament on Saturday with a perfect 5-0 record.
“It was not an easy tournament and I think any team there could have won it,” Mt. Pleasant Coach Jeff Schulz said. “I think what it came down to was that our athletes were the most consistent for the entire day.”
The Panthers defeated the host team in two sets (21-17 and 21-13) after losing a three-set match to them in the Ottumwa Tournament the weekend before. Mt. Pleasant also downed Galesburg by scores of 21-15 and 21-11. They topped conference foe Ft. Madison in three sets — the Panthers fell in the first, 21-14, but came back to win the next two, 21-17 and 15-9. They then topped another SEC opponent in two sets, dropping Fairfield by scores of 21-17 and 21-18. Finally, the Panthers beat Davis County in three sets, losing the first 21-17 before coming back to win the last two, 21-19 and 15-9.
Kelsi Phipps had a team-high 26 kills in the tournament and Brianne Holtkamp added 20. Taryne Shull came up with 15 kills and Lydia Smith had 11.
One Panther setter, Ashley Loving, was out with an injury, and so Hannah Becker finished the day with 76 assists.
“Hannah Becker ran a 5-1 and really rose to the occasion,” Schulz said. “Hattie Liechty took on the rover duties of Ashley (Loving) and just did a fantastic job.”
Brianne Potts was the team leader with 46 digs on the day and Holtkamp added 37. Becker chipped in 25.
Phipps and Shull each put up nine blocks while Becker and Shayleigh Smith had six blocks apiece.
Holtkamp served eight aces and Lydia Smith served seven. Potts and Becker each had six, while Phipps served three aces.
The Panthers move to 20-4 on the season and travel to Washington tonight (Tuesday) for a Southeast Conference match.
