Mt. Pleasant trap team adds to trophy case in third season
The Mt. Pleasant trap team has officially finished its season, and the state meet is in the books. In the third season since the club program was started, the Panthers added quite a bit of hardware to their collection.
“We had some real stiff compeition this year, but overall, they did very, very well,” said Coach John Klopfenstein. “I’m very proud of every one of them, and we’re looking forward to next year.”
Results from recent meets are listed below.
In the first-ever Southeast Iowa Conference Shoot on May 18, the Panthers competed at Knoxville along with 11 other schools.
Mt. Pleasant finished second to Ft. Madison at the shoot, but took first overall in the conference in target proficiency with a combined score of 875-R90, which is a combination of virtual shoots and conference championship score.
As a result, Mt. Pleasant was the first team to claim possession of the conference’s traveling trophy.
In the individual events, Ashley Hummel finished first on the season in the girls’ division of the conference.
In the Iowa Cup, Mt. Pleasant finished eighth out of 40 teams. In the Iowa High School All-State Team Summary, they finished 16th out of 78 Schools, with a score of 1,314 out of 1,500 targets.
The Panthers’ JD Klopfenstein was the top varsity boys’ division shooter for Mt. Pleasant with a score of 274 out of 300.
Hummel was the top varsity girls’ division shooter for the team with a score of 234 out of 300.
In junior varsity, Alec Skubal was the top JV boy’ division shooter for Mt. Pleasant and Alyssa Smith was the top Panther shooter for JV girls.
At the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Championship, Smith, a first-year shooter, finished third overall of 62 shooters in junior varsity with a total of 169 out of 200 targets. Fourth place went to Mt. Pleasant’s Grace Davidson, also a first-year shooter, with a score of 167 out of 200.
In the Iowa Games Satellite Shoot, which was on June 15 at the Tri-State Gun Club in Montrose, Mt. Pleasant took second overall in the high school team event with the following shooters: Cody Bruggemeyer, JD Klopfenstein, Justin Doscher, Brandon Strait, Smith and Davidson.
Also the high school individual events, the following people won medals: JD Klopfenstein — first place 16 yards, first place 19 yards, third place 16-yard doubles; Bruggemeyer — second place 16-yard doubles; Smith — first place ladies 16 yards, first place ladies 19 yards; Hummel — second place ladies 16 yards, second place ladies 19 yards, first place ladies 16-yard doubles; Davidson — third place ladies 16 yards.
The Panthers have one unofficial event left on their schedule, which will be in Carthage, Ill., on July 6.
