Mt. Pleasant volleyball goes 3-1 at Ottumwa
OTTUMWA — The Mt. Pleasant volleyball team was a perfect 3-0 in pool play at Saturday’s Ottumwa Tournament, but the Panthers fell to Burlington in the first round of the championship flight playoffs for a 3-1 record on the day.
The Panthers dropped their first set to Davis County, 21-14, before coming back to win the next two by scores of 21-17 and 15-7. They played similarly against Ottumwa, losing 21-16 in the first set but winning the next two, 21-15 and 15-12.
They swept Washington in two sets, 21-10 and 21-11, for their third pool play win.
In the match against Burlington, the Panthers once again dropped the opening set, 25-20. However, they weren’t able to recover this time. They won the second set, 25-22, but dropped the tiebreaker by a 15-10 decision.
Kelsi Phipps led the team with 23 kills on the day, followed by Taryne Shull with 17 and Brianne Holtkamp with 14. Ashley Loving had 49 assists and Hannah Becker added 31. Phipps put up nine blocks and Shull had seven.
Loving had eight aces on 41-of-43 serving, and Lydia Smith went 36-of-37 with seven aces. Brianne Potts had a team-high 43 digs and Holtkamp added 36.
The Panthers are now 15-4 and play in the Burlington Tournament next weekend.
