Mt. Pleasant, W-MU pick up big wins against Bears
DANVILLE — The Bears were no match for Mt. Pleasant or Winfield-Mt. Union.
The Panthers and Wolves each picked up big wins over Danville and English Valleys at the Danville softball tournament on Saturday — Mt. Pleasant defeated the host team, 12-2, and came up with a 24-1 win over English Valleys, while W-MU won 10-4 against the Danville Bears and defeated the Bears from North English by a score of 18-3.
In the matchup between the Henry County teams, however, the score was a lot closer: the Panthers topped W-MU by a narrow margin, 6-5.
The teams did all their scoring in the first three innings. W-MU got on the board first with a run in the opening frame, but Mt. Pleasant responded in the top of the second with three runs.
The Wolves got another one in the bottom of the second, but Mt. Pleasant tacked on three more in the third for their winning total.
W-MU scored three runs of its own in the third, but came up just short in the end.
Mt. Pleasant’s Jena Stukerjugen picked up the win on the mound and is now 1-2 on the season. She gave up five hits and five runs (one earned) in six innings pitched, walked two, hit two and struck out five.
W-MU pitcher Paige Breon took
the loss for the Wolves.
Sarah Moffett led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Morgan Fraise was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Hattie Liechty was 1-for-2 with two runs knocked in. Jena Stukerjurgen also batted in a run.
Five W-MU players had one hit each.
After playing the close game against each other, neither W-MU nor Mt. Pleasant had any trouble winning out the rest of the tournament.
The Wolves took on the host team and won by a score of 10-4, with Breon getting the win on the mound. Breon helped herself out with a pair of hits in the game.
Sophie Kongable, Sam Jamison and Caitlin Jamison each had a double for W-MU.
Against English Valleys, Lindsey Schick pitched for the Wolves, getting the win in the 18-3 victory.
At the plate, Caitlin Jamison had a pair of hits for W-MU, and Karlie Wade hit a double.
Wade had two RBIs and Jamison knocked in three.
For Mt. Pleasant, Goble had a big game against Danville, pitching all five innings and allowing just four hits for two runs (one earned). She walked one and stuck out seven.
Goble also had an impressive showing at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs batted in.
Hattie Liechty was 3-for-4 in the game with a double and two RBIs, while Stukerjurgen was 2-for-2.
In the Panthers’ matchup against English Valleys, eight of nine batters had at least one hit.
Fraise was 3-for-4 with three doubles and six runs knocked in. Goble also hit a double.
Moffett was 2-for-2, and Bailey Johnson was also 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
The Panthers had 12 hits and 10 walks on the night — including three walks from Hattie Liechty. They also stole 12 bases.
Caitlin Liechty pitched for the Panthers, giving up two hits and one earned run in three innings. She walked one batter and struck out six.
The Panthers are now 3-2 on the season and W-MU is 3-3.
Next up for Mt. Pleasant is the Davis County Tournament in Bloomfield on Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m. They then host the Mt. Pleasant Classic at East Lake Park on Wednesday.
W-MU travels to WACO tonight (Monday) for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division matchup, starting with the varsity contest at 5:30 p.m. JV will play the second game.
