Mt. Pleasant wrestlers advance in state tournament
DES MOINES — After day one in Des Moines, four Henry County wrestlers are still competing in the state tournament.
“Everyone did real well overall on day one,” Mt. Pleasant Coach Anthony Blint said of the five Mt. Pleasant wrestlers.
Mt. Pleasant’s Josh Larson, Jayton Phillips and Justin Dilks lost their first-round matches on Thursday but came with wins in their wrestleback matches.
“All three — Larson, Phillips and Dilks — came back to wrestle tough matches in their wrestlebacks, but they all got a win,” Blint said.
The Panthers’ Colton Aplara won his first 220-pound match, but lost a match this morning.
Tyler Lanphier, Mt. Pleasant, and Cey Saeugling, WACO, each lost their first match and their wrestleback matches.
Saeugling (160) saw a tough first opponent in Alburnett’s Dylan Windfield, who is 44-1 on the season. Windfield pinned Saeugling, sending him to the consolation side of the bracket, where he lost his second match to Dylan Rolfes (29-6) of Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn by fall.
Saeugling, a junior at WACO, ends the season with a record of 34-12.
Lanphier (120) also had a tough draw, facing Carroll’s Justin Kaltved (26-3) in the first round. He then lost by decision to Patrick Rasheed (13-8) of Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
“He (Lanphier) had a couple real tough matches, but he wrestled really well,” Blint said. “I think nerves just got the best of him.”
Lanphier, a junior, ends his season with a record of 28-15.
Larson (145) lost his first-round match to Bettendorf’s Bubba Hernandez (35-4) by fall, but came back to defeated Zack Robinson (26-10), pinning the Johnson wrestler in 4:42.
The Mt. Pleasant junior is now 13-13 on the season.
Phillips (170) opened the state tournament against undefeated Duke Egli of Ft. Dodge, and lost to the 38-0 wrestler by fall. He came back with a win by decision, 6-4, in a tiebreaker against Linn-Mar’s Luke Wempen (15-11).
Phillips, a senior, is now 24-15.
Dilks (182) lost a close first match to Southeast Polk’s Luke Sargent (33-6), falling by a 3-1 decision in the first sudden victory round. He then went on to win his wrestleback match against Drake Allen (28-13) of Cedar Rapids Jefferson by a 13-8 decision, upping his season record to 26-6.
Aplara wrestled one match in the opening day of the tournament, and he won it. He claimed a 2-0 decision over Sioux City West’s Anthony Combs (29-11).
“He was in good position on his feet,” Blint said. “It was a real good Colton Aplara match.”
This morning, Aplara lost a match to Waverly Shell Rock’s Kaleb Staack (41-6) by a 3-1 decision.
The Mt. Pleasant senior is now 30-6 on the season.
All four Panthers will wrestle again this afternoon.
