Mt. Pleasant's Southeastern Community College Center to host job fair June 5

May 24, 2013

When applying for a job, wouldn’t it be nice to stand out from everyone else? Wouldn’t it be nice to meet several employers and education service providers all in one place? Well, here’s your chance.

Southeastern Community College, the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce and Iowa Workforce Development have teamed up to provide opportunities for individuals to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) and attend a mini-job fair on June 5.

The event will be held at SCC’s Mt. Pleasant Learning Center on Wednesday, June 5. Attendees can take NCRC testing sessions at 8:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. The job fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To receive certification, attendees must take a three-hour assessment session. Participants must register for these sessions in advance by calling Kelly Brousseau at 319-385-8012. Attendees should call early as seats are limited.

Those attending the certification session will take three WorkKeys assessments: applied mathematics, locating information and reading for information. Individuals will answer test questions about scenarios that may occur on the job. These assessments gauge skills that employers deem necessary to succeed in the workplace. While such assessments generally cost $48, they have been made available at no charge through Gov. Terry Branstad’s Skilled Iowa Program.

William Stuflick, regional manager of the Iowa Workforce Development office, explains that this event is designed to connect qualified job-seekers with area businesses.

“The nationally-recognized NCRC serves as proof of an individual’s workplace skills. Many area employers require or recommend that job applicants are certified,” says Stuflick.

Not only will individuals have a chance to become certified, they will have an opportunity to talk to area employers and education services providers.

Attendees can meet with 15 to 20 local employers in the manufacturing, healthcare, retail and construction industries, including  Hearth Technologies, Iowa Home-based Services/Advanced Home Healthcare, Mackay Mitchell Envelope, Manpower, Nypro Kanaak, Peebles, Taft-Wiley Plumbing Heating and Air, Team Staffing, Optimae, Family Video, Temp Associates, United States Army, Walmart and West Liberty Foods. Education service providers include: the Center for Business (CBIZ), Southeastern Community College, and Iowa Workforce Development (IWD).

For information about the NCRC assessment sessions, the mini-job fair, or for assistance preparing a resume for the job fair, contact Kelly Brousseau at 319-385-8012.
