New London golf returns, adds some talent to girls’ and boys’ teams
The New London girls’ golf team returns three all-conference selections from last year’s talented team, and they add quite a few new golfers as well.
The boys, led by last year’s state qualifier, sophomore Tristan Kadel, have a few returners, but are overall a very young group.
Both teams are looking for a successful year on the heels of their impressive seasons last year.
The girls’ team went 11-1 last season, giving Coach Greg Lerdal a career record of 158-8 with the girls’ team. He has been coaching girls’ golf at New London for 14 years.
He has been coaching boys’ golf for 17 years, and he has a record of 158-37 with the boys’ team.
Last year, the Tiger boys went 10-2 on the season. They graduated three seniors from that team, but bring back some young talent.
Along with Kadel, they return varsity starter Hagin Gillis, also a sophomore.
They also bring back junior Tyler Schneider, sophomore Kyle Hill and sophomore Quincy Porter. The three of them rotated in the sixth spot last year.
The team also adds junior Cody Bartells, sophomore Tanner Schneider and freshmen Kyler Meyers, Tyler Metler and Jaydon Flowers.
“We are very young,” Lerdal said.
On the girls’ side, the Tigers have one senior in Baylee Lindell.
They also bring back three other letterwinners: juniors Breanna Stevens and Ashlyn Brown and sophomore Jorgi Krieger.
Lindell, Stevens and Krieger were each all-conference selections last season.
The girls’ team adds five freshman to its lineup in Emma Pry, Victoria Noel, Morgan Oliver, Paeytn Prottsman and Frankie Johnson.
The Tigers have not had many opportunities to get on the course yet this season, because of the cold, rain and snow over the last few weeks.
It may take them a little while yet to figure out exactly who will golf varsity on each team, but they aim to put it all together in time for another successful season.
They are scheduled to start their season tomorrow (Thursday) at Louisa-Muscatine.
