New London softball sweeps Panthers
NEW LONDON — The Mt. Pleasant and New London softball teams clashed once again last night, this time in New London.
Both games of last night’s twinbill went the Tigers’ way, as they blanked the visitors in game one, 5-0, and came up with a 6-4 win in game two.
The two Henry County teams had played once already this season, with New London taking that contest by a score of 5-3. The Panthers look to get one back in the teams’ final meeting, which will be at the Mt. Pleasant Classic at East Lake Park on Saturday, June 22.
New London is now 17-5 overall and remains 5-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division. Mt. Pleasant falls to 8-16 on the season and is still 2-8 in the Southeast Conference.
In game one, the teams were locked in a pitchers’ dual through five innings. New London managed one run in the first frame, but that wrapped up the offense until the sixth, when the Tigers were able to tack on four more runs on hits by Caitlin Chiri, Christner and Emma Pry, as well as a Panther error.
Christner and Emily Parks each went 2-for-3 in the game; Parks hit a double and knocked in three runs.
In game two, the Tigers came on strong, with five runs over the first three innings — including three runs in the opening frame.
Mt. Pleasant kept it close, however, scoring one in the first inning and two in the second.
They had some help in the nightcap from Leslie Taylor, who went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
The Panthers were able to score one more in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Tigers, who had also plated a run in the fifth.
Christner and Parks once again led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 and 3-for-4, respectively. Each hit a double, and Parks had two RBIs.
Christner pitched two complete games against the Panthers, giving up seven hits. She threw a one-hitter in game one, walking two batters while striking out 12.
The Panthers’ only hit came from Hattie Liechty, who singled in the sixth inning. The only other Mt. Pleasant baserunners were Allison Buckert, who walked in the third frame, and Ali Dorn, who took a base on balls in the sixth.
The Mt. Pleasant batters started to catch up to Christner in game two, connecting six times for four runs (three earned). The New London freshman walked two and struck out 11 in the second game.
A pair of incoming freshman split time on the mound for Mt. Pleasant, with Cali Liechty starting the opener and Bailey Johnson starting the nightcap. Each also pitched in relief of the other.
Liechty went 5 2/3 innings before Johnson came in to get the last out of the game. Liechty gave up six hits and two walks for five runs (three earned) and struck out five.
Johnson came on in relief, and the first batter she faced grounded out to third, ending the inning.
Johnson stayed on the mound for the start of game two, and gave up three hits and seven walks for five runs (one earned) in 4 1/3 innings. She struck out four.
Liechty came in for the last 1 2/3 innings, giving up four hits for one earned run. She struck out one batter.
Next up for the Panthers is a doubleheader at Burlington on Friday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Tigers take to the road on Friday for a game against Columbus.
Both teams will play the Mt. Pleasant Classic at East Lake Park in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, where they will see each other for the last time this season. They will also face teams from West Burlington and Columbus Junction.
