New London starts slowly, then rolls to 10-0 blanking in regional
NEW LONDON — Pummeling a team twice during the season naturally can lead to a letdown the third time the clubs play.
Such was the case for New London Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class 1A Regional Softball Tournament when Harmony visited. The Tigers had beaten the Rockets, who ended the season at 2-20, by a cumulative 34 runs in two previous meetings.
Wednesday night it was a struggle for the Tigers, who after scoring three times in the first, never did get the offense clicking until a six-run sixth en route to a 10-0, five-inning victory.
With Morgan Christner in the circle, the Rocket hitters were overmatched, but that fact didn’t put any bonus points on the board for the Tigers. Christner allowed just one hit, a bloop single. The sophomore righthander didn’t issue a walk and struck out 10.
Emma Pry’s first-inning double, and error and a wild pitch resulted in three New London first-inning runs. The Tigers made it 4-0 in the third when Pry walked, swiped second and raced home on Jorgi Krieger’s single.
However, the best was yet to come. Ninth-place hitter Sarah Holtkamp belted the first Harmony pitch of the fifth down the rightfield line and by the ball was returned to the infield, was standing on third. After a Sami Koontz bunt single, Victoria Noel lofted a flyball to the outfield, scoring Holtkamp.
The Tigers were far from done.
Later in the inning, Christner slammed a two-run homer and the Tigers later added three more runs, on an error, infield out and a bases-loaded walk.
Holtkamp, Koontz and Pry all had a pair of hits for the winners. The other bingos came from the bats of Noel, Christner, Parks and Krieger. Pry stole recorded two of the winners’ six base thefts.
Now 24-4, the defending state runners-up travel to Lone Tree Friday night to face the 15-16 Lions.
