New London, W-MU volleyball start season ranked in Class 1A
Both the New London and Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball teams return a number of talented players from a solid 2012 campaign, and as a result, both teams have earned a spot in the Class 1A preseason rankings.
New London comes in at No. 6, and W-MU takes No. 9.
The Tigers went 30-11 last year and the Wolves were 28-8; W-MU knocked New London out of the postseason tournament before falling to Holy Trinity Catholic in the regional final.
The Crusaders, who return powerhouse Mikaela Foecke, are No. 1 in the preseason rankings.
New London returns 11 letterwinners this season, including all-conference and all-district selection Sarah Holtkamp, a senior setter who had 722 assists last season.
They also bring back outside hitters Emily Parks and Jorgi Krieger, juniors who also received all-conference recognition last seaosn.
Krieger put down 211 kills last season, followed by Parks with 200.
W-MU brings back five letterwinners in Erica Robison, Shelby Therme, Emily Mathews, Layne Davis and Nicole Escher, all of whom received all-conference honors last season.
Robison, a senior, had 275 kills and a team-high 48 blocks for W-MU last year. Therme, also a senior, served 82 aces and had 199 kills and 323 digs.
The Wolves start their season Thursday at West Burlington, against West Burlington and Pekin.
New London hosted a scimmage yesterday and plays its first official match at the Danville Tournament on Saturday.
