NEW LONDON — Carlea Beckman and Camryn Lair do not hesitate to help out a friend in need.

When the second graders at New London’s Clark Elementary School found out that Xavier Brandenburg’s new service dog needs training — which costs $4,000 — the two came up with a way to help raise the money.

“We heard that Xavier’s dog died,” explained Beckman. “They already got a new one, but he needs training,”

The girls came up with an easy fundraiser idea: for a $1 donation, students could wear a hat at school on Tuesday.

“We thought if we brought a dollar, we could raise money,” said Beckman.

“We just thought it would be a fun way to raise money,” added Lair.

“And see some crazy hats,” added Beckman.

As there are 250 students at Clark Elementary, the girls set a goal of $100. They ended up with more than double that amount, a total of $222.06.

“That’s pretty cool,” said Lair early Tuesday afternoon, after hearing they were at $194.81 and still counting. “We didn’t even think we’d make our goal.”

“I think some teachers helped,” she continued, noting that some of the teachers were putting in more than $1.

“And maybe some people brought a dollar but didn’t have a hat,” added Beckman.

“A lot of people helped,” concluded Lair.

Brandenburg is in seventh grade, though his classroom is at Clark Elementary. He is autistic and uses a service dog to help him
