NL/W-MU finishes third at conference tournamentWACO wrestlers come up with second-place finish, fourth-place finish
LONE TREE — Eight New London/Winfield-Mt. Union wrestlers placed in the top six, including heavyweight champion Avery Jacobs, to lead the Tigers to a third-place team finish at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference wrestling tournament in Lone Tree on Saturday.
WACO also competed in the tournament and had two wrestlers finish in the top six places.
NL/W-MU had 106 points as team, behind only Mediapolis (302 points) and Columbus (158).
The Tigers came in ahead of Wapello, 98 points; Highland, 83.5; Van Buren, 82; Lone Tree, 75; Pekin, 73; Cardinal, 66; West Burlington/Notre Dame, 45; Louisa-Muscatine, 37; and WACO, 34.
WACO’s Cey Saeugling finished in second place in the 160-pound weight class and Skyler Miller scored for the Warriors with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds.
For NL/W-MU, Avery Jacobs won the 285-pound weight class by pinning Cody Icenogle of Lone Tree in 4:43.
Kyle Davis (220) took second for the Tigers, and they had two wrestlers place third: Tyler Schneider at 132 pounds and Tanner Gipple at 160 pounds.
Brody Burns took home a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds, and Johnny Quinn was fifth at 106.
Two Tigers also placed sixth in their weight classes: Tanner Schneider (170) and Jairin Swailes (138).
Next up for both the WACO and NL/W-MU wrestlers is the sectional tournament on Saturday.
The Tigers will compete at Mediapolis and the Warriors will travel to Iowa Valley in Marengo.
Both tournaments start at noon, and the top two wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon.
