NL/W-MU wrestling sweeps Lone Tree, L&M
LONE TREE — One was as close as could be and one was decisive, but both were dual wins for the New London/Winfield-Mt. Union wrestling team on Thursday night.
The Tigers defeated Louisa-Muscatine by a score of 37-36 on a tiebreaker and won the dual against host team Lone Tree by a score of 45-24.
Against L&M, the Tigers got three straight wins to start the dual.
Kyle Davis (220) won by decision over Seth Kessel, 5-4, setting the tone for what would be a very close dual — as close, in fact, as it could possibly get.
Avery Jacobs (285) then pinned Ryland Crawford in 2:52, and Johnathon Quinn (106) took six points by forfeit to give the Tigers a 15-0 lead.
L&M got six points back by forfeit at 113 pounds, and, after a double forfeit at 120, won by pin at 126 to cut the Tigers’ lead to three.
Tyler Schneider (132) stretched it back to six with a win by decision over Tristan Rinnert, 9-3, but L&M tied the score with a pin at 138.
In the last six matches, the teams took turns scoring. L&M had to forfeit twice, and NL/W-MU had to forfeit one match. In the other three matches, Brody Burns (145) won by pin for the Tigers in 3:17 and L&M took took the 170- and 195-pound matches by fall to end the dual in a 36-36 tie.
The tiebreaker awarded one point to the team with the most matches won — the Tigers had seven, and L&M won six, giving NL/W-MU the win in the dual.
In the dual against Lone Tree, the Tigers won eight matches.
Schneider won by fall in 4:13 and Tanner Schneider (170) won by fall in 4:28. Gabe Whaley also pinned his opponent, taking the match in 2:16.
Jacob won by decision, 3-1, and four Tiger wrestlers won by forfeit: Davis, Quinn, Burns and Tanner Gipple.
NL/W-MU is now 4-10 in duals on the season.
They will wrestle this weekend at the Center Point-Urbana Duals in Urbana. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
