NL, WACO wrestling compete at Warrior Invitational
WAYLAND — WACO’s Cey Saeugling and New London’s Avery Jacobs each took home the title from their respective weight classes at the Warrior Invitational on Saturday.
Saeugling (170) pinned Iowa City Regina’s Justin Hunter in 2:15 in the championship match.
Jacobs also won by fall, pinning Tri-County/Montezuma’s Ethan Blair in 2:49 in the heavyweight championship.
Both WACO and New London had other wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes.
At 120 pounds, the Tigers’ Reno Chiri took second place, falling in the championship match against English Valley’s Sheldon Ealy by an 11-4 decision.
Tanner Schneider of New London was fifth in the 160-pound weight class after winning the fifth-place match by 6-3 decision over Clay Harper of Tri-County/Montezuma.
WACO’s Josh Shumaker also took fifth place, winning the 285-pound fifth-place match by fall (3:20) over Tyler Thompson of Tri-County/Montezuma.
Finally, Cody Bartels of New London placed sixth at 220 pounds. Bartels fell in the fifth-place match by a 9-6 decision to Iowa City Regina’s Jarrod Brinkman.
As a team, New London scored 61 points and took ninth place of 13 teams. WACO scored 38 points and placed 11th.
New London will wrestle again Thursday at L&M, starting at 6:30 p.m.
WACO will also compete Thursday; the Warriors travel to Highland to wrestle against Highland and Pekin, starting at 6:30 p.m.
