The No. 24 Mt. Pleasant wrestlers tied a school record on Thursday night with their 14th dual win of the season.
The Panthers faced Burlington in a non-conference dual and cruised through the night with a 51-19 victory.
Mt. Pleasant started the day out on a 30-0 run. During that stretch, Corbin Broeker (113 lbs.) and Avante Henley (132 lbs.) picked up wins by decision, Nate Wallace (138 lbs.) picked up a first-period pin and three Panthers won via forfeit.
Burlington took 19 of the next 25 points, with Mt. Pleasant’s only win coming from Tyler Davis (160 lbs.). Davis picked up a quick 43-second pin.
Mt. Pleasant finished the meet with three wins, picking up a couple of forfeits and ending the night with Anthony Carrasco (285 lbs.) getting a win by decision.
It was senior night for Mt. Pleasant and the seniors were a perfect 3-0. Davis won by pin, Carrasco won by decision and Dalton Shull (220 lbs.) won by forfeit.
“The kids have been working hard, so they deserve (the record),” Coach Anthony Blint said after the meet. “They’re hard workers, so if you’ve got a good group of kids that are working hard, the sky is the limit.”
Mt. Pleasant have also qualified to wrestle in the state dual meet next month. The Panthers will face ninth-ranked Johnston in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with the winner facing eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Blint says the main goal for the state dual meet will be getting his young wrestlers some experience to build for future teams.
“This year, we’re going to go up and get our feet wet, being a young team,” Blint said. “Hopefully they got some experience up there and (are) ready to go for the following years.”
The Panthers will be at the Fairfield invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. and will have a chance at more dual wins in a home quad on Thursday, Feb. 2. Full results for Thursday night’s meet can be found below.
