Panther girls stand out in field events at ISU Indoor meet
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ track and field team had seven top-15 finishes against some tough competition at the Iowa State University Indoor meet on Monday.
Four of those top finishes were in field events.
“I was very impressed with our field events last night,” Coach Dave Hutchcroft said.
The snow storm that hit parts of Iowa cut the field in half, but there were still more than 60 teams at the meet, and many were 4A schools.
Mary Wester took fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 37-4 1/4.
“Mary has been very consistent with her throws in the two meets so far this year,” Hutchcroft said, “and she is closing in on the 25-year-old school record of 39-3 set by Traci Dunn in 1988.”
Leslie Taylor also had a fifth-place finish. Hers was in the long jump, as she jumped 16-4, the best indoor jump of her career.
The only finishers ahead of Wester and Taylor in these events were seniors competing for 4A schools.
Grace Lutovsky took sixth place for the Panthers in the high jump at 5-0.
Hannah Becker finished eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.58 seconds.
In 11th place was the Mt. Pleasant 4x800-meter relay team of Natalie Ita, Natalie Myers, Taryne Shull and Chloe Haffarnan.
No team time was given for the event, but Shull ran a 2:31 split and Haffarnan ran her leg in 2:29. The Panthers had the top 3A finish in the event.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Taylor, Becker, Tasha Vancil and Lutovsky finished in 53.7 seconds and took 14th place overall.
Becker had one other top finish, taking 15th place in the high jump at 4-10.
Next up for the Panthers is the Central College Indoor in Pella on Saturday. That meet begins at 10 a.m.
