We’re one day away from the official start of girls’ high school basketball season.
The Mt. Pleasant girls will start their season with Durant on Saturday, Nov. 19, at home.
Durant is coming off of an 18-6 season where they finished at No. 15 in Class 2A. The Wildcats will be a different team this season though, as they lost four of their five starters from last year.
Mt. Pleasant, on the other hand, will bring back all but two of their scorers from last season, including their top two scorers, Kalynn Batey and Sarah Moffett.
Batey, a junior, scored 191 points for 8.7 points per game last season and Sarah Moffett had 189 total points for 8.6 points per game.
The Panthers went 6-16 last year and tied for fourth place in the conference with Ft. Madison, at 1-7.
The game will be the first of four straight home games for Mt. Pleasant, all of which are against teams who closed out last year in the state rankings.
After Saturday’s game, the Panthers will have a short rest before hosting Pella on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Lady Dutch closed the year out as the eighth-ranked team in Class 4A.
Mt. Pleasant will then host Fairfield and Keokuk on two straight Fridays in December to begin their SEC schedule.
The Panthers will host the Trojans (No. 12 in 4A last season) on Dec. 2, and the Chiefs (No. 5 in 4A last season) on Dec. 9.
Mt. Pleasant will finally hit the road on Friday, Dec. 16, against Ft. Madison, and will travel to Central Lee the next day.
Last season, Mt. Pleasant played Durant in the third game of the season. The Panthers fell, 60-34, despite eight points from Batey and six from Rylee Amos.
Saturday’s game will begin at 2:30 p.m., with the junior varsity game starting at 1 p.m.
