Panther losing skid reaches six games

Jul 08, 2014

Mt. Pleasant’s softball team is going in the wrong direction at the wrong time.

Wins have been difficult to secure for Troy Mears’ team and it was more of the same Monday night in a conference twin-bill with Fairfield.

The Trojans, one of the better Southeast Conference clubs, handed the Panthers their fifth and sixth consecutive losses, 7-3 and 10-3, at the Mapleleaf Complex. The defeats come on the heels of a double dip in a tournament Friday at the University of Iowa Softball Complex where Lisbon and Waterloo East prevailed by respective scores of 2-1 and 4-1.

MP’s tailspin began a night earlier (July 3) when they were bested twice by Washington in conference play.

Spotting Fairfield a pair of runs in the first inning of the first game Monday night, the Panthers played from the short end of the stick throughout the doubleheader.

Fairfield made it 7-0 with a five-run third before the hosts finally found the offense and scored once in the fifth and twice more in the sixth.

Bailey Johnson, Jenna Stukerjurgen and losing-pitcher Shelby Allender all doubled for the hosts. Leslie Taylor’s single drove in a run and the senior speedster also pilfered a pair of bags.

Other bright spots on offense were Hattie Liechty with a pair of singles and a stolen base. Jackie Fraise added the seventh and final hit.

Allender gave up six earned runs on 12 hits. She did not walk a Trojan and sent four back to the bench on strikes.

It was more of the same in the nightcap. Fairfield scored in all but two innings and rolled to a 6-1 lead after three innings. A pair of markers in each of the sixth and seventh innings more than offset single runs by the hosts in the bottom of the final two innings.

Julie Lasswell and Johnson showed some thump at the plate. Lasswell turned in a 3-4 performance while Johnson poled a double and single in as many trips, knocking in a run.

Liechty’s single also put a run on the board and Allender had the other RBI.

In addition to the aforementioned hitters, Taylor smacked the other bingo.

Stukerjurgen absorbed the loss, allowing 10 earned runs and 15 hits. She walked one and struck out the same number.

Mt. Pleasant, 15-23 on the campaign, will attempt to seize some post-season tournament momentum Thursday evening when they journey to Keokuk for a regular season-ending doubleheader.
