Anthony Carrasco is a senior at Mt. Pleasant high school and a member of the Panther wrestling team.
Carrasco is the biggest of the Panther varsity wrestlers. He wrestles in the 285 lbs. (heavyweight) division.
Carrasco met with The News on Wednesday evening before practice. The questions appear in bold.
Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? No, I was actually born in New Mexico.
When did you move here? I moved here when I was going into second grade.
How long have you been wrestling? I’ve been wrestling since about seventh grade.
Did you have anything specific that made you want to wrestle? My uncle Phil wrestled and he started telling me about it and I just started thinking a bout it and got psyched up to do it.
Do you have plans for after high school? No, I don’t. Not right now.
What’s a day of preparation like on a meet day for a wrestler? Just get here, weigh in. Eat if you can. Help roll out the mats and just wait until it’s time to start.
Is it nerve-racking throughout the day when you know you have a match? Yes it is. It’s very nerve-racking.
Is it more fun for the 285 lbs. guys not having to cut weight like the other guys on the team? Yes it is, it’s a lot more fun!
Do you have to hide your food from some of the other guys? I just kind of keep it to myself. Keep my mouth shut.
As a heavyweight, who is the biggest kid you have ever wrestled? I wrestled the Grinnell heavyweight. He weighed in at 284 lbs.
Pretty big. And how much do you weigh? I weigh exactly 237 lbs.
So giving up quite a bit to him there. A lot.
Do you ever get nervous about falling or throwing somebody into the cheerleaders or media guys that are right there on the mat? Umm, not really. I kind of don’t think about it at all…I’ve gotten close before.
What’s one word or phrase that Coach Blint uses during practice the most? Get to it (and) Get going.
Who gets the most pumped up before their match? I have to say Dalton Shull.
Any favorite memories as a wrestler on or off the mat? My junior year, which would be last year. It was in the third period and there were 15 seconds left. My match was tied 3-3. I just looked at my coach and then took a single-leg shot and took him out. I just rode him out and ended up winning 5-3. It was a kid from Eddyville.
Favorite sport besides wrestling? I have to say football.
Now here is one we ask everyone. If you could hang out with one celebrity for a day, who would you choose? Rob Gronkowski.
Why do you say that, are you a Patriots fan? Yeah.
Would you play a little football with him? I’d try! I’d try but he’d probably beat me.
Would you let him hit you? Not really, no!
What if you could pick a super power for a whole year? Super strength?
Oh, easy one, right? Yeah.
You’d be state champion easily. Oh yeah.
When you’re on road trips, who is the teammate that you like to sit by the most? I sit by myself. Me, myself and I.
Oh, ok. Is it quieter on a road trip with wrestling than any other sport? Yeah, big time.
I guess that makes sense. Alright lightning round…McDonald's or Taco Bell? McDonald's.
iPhone or Android? Andoid.
What’s your favorite Android app? Snapchat.
Stay in doors or go out and do something? Go out and do something.
What are you usually doing if you’re not at school or practice? I’m hunting.
Did you get anything this year? Not yet. I got a coyote but that’s pretty much it.
Favorite movie or TV show? I’d have to say Movie. My favorite movie would be Toy Story 3.
Favorite band or singer? My favorite singer would have to be Brantley Gilbert
Last question. What’s your favorite class in school? I have to say Health.
Who teaches that one? Mrs. Coffey.
