Dalton Shull is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Mt. Pleasant wrestling team, where he competes at 220 lbs.
Shull is a multi-sport athlete for Mt. Pleasant. He also plays football and baseball for the Panthers.
Shull met with The News on Tuesday before practice. The questions appear in bold with his answers following.
Easy questions first. Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Yeah, I did.
How long have you been wrestling? I’ve been wrestling for five years now.
Do you have anything that kind of got you into it? Just friends begging me to wrestle.
Do you have plans for after high school? Yep, I’m playing college football at Iowa Central over in Ft. Dodge.
Any favorite memories as a wrestler on or off the mat? Just winning.
Do you have any favorite wins? All of them.
What is your diet like during wrestling season compared to other sports seasons? Just eating a lot of fruits; a lot of healthy stuff. Try to cut away from the pop. All the bad stuff like that. Just mostly fruits, vegetables; all the healthy stuff.
Are you ever kind of a tweener as far as whether you are going to make weight? I’m usually pretty good.
Out of all your teammates, including yourself, who do you think gets the most pumped up for their match? Probably James DeMeyer actually. He gets up there with the pump up and everything like that.
We asked Anthony Carrasco that question and he said you. No, that’s for football. I get there for football.
What is more nerve-racking, the day of a wrestling meet or a day when you know you’re starting pitcher for a baseball game? Probably starting pitching. That would probably be the biggest one.
A little more pressure on your shoulder? Yep!
During duals, do you prefer to have your match early in the meet and get it over with or to be towards the end? I prefer towards the end.
Do you have any trouble watching the other matches or are you in your own zone? Watching other matches kind of gets me into my own zone. I know what to look for and everything like that. Know what’s going to happen.
Do you have a favorite school to wrestle against? Washington. They’re like our biggest rival for wrestling so I like wrestling against them. They’re a really good wrestling team so I like the competitiveness.
This is one we ask everyone. If you could hang out with one celebrity for a day, who would you choose? Probably Richard Sherman. I like him, he’s pretty cool.
What would you guys do? Play football, hopefully. I think that would be pretty cool.
What if you could pick a super power? Be able to fly. You wouldn’t have to worry about running and walking everywhere, just fly everywhere basically.
Would you fly anywhere far away or just use it as like a convenience thing? Jamaica. Go to Jamaica, definitely.
What if you could go on vacation, would you go to the beach, New York City or a different country? Different country, Jamaica of course.
Would you ever want to go to like Europe? Probably Africa or Australia or something like that. That would be cool to go to.
Do you have any superstitions? No, not really. Honestly no.
Have you ever thrown anyone or gotten knocked into a coach or a cheerleader on the sideline? Last weekend at Fairfield, I actually threw somebody into their coach.
Knocked him over? Yep. And knocked all of the chairs over and everything.
I’m sure the crowd had a good reaction to that, right? Yeah, definitely!
Would you rather be rich or famous? Rich.
How come? Just because I could buy whatever I want really.
Not into the fame life? Nah, I don’t like cameras and stuff like that.
What’s your favorite part of the Superbowl, the game, commercials or halftime show? Probably the game. I like that the most.
Favorite movie or TV show? Probably Diesel Brothers. It’s a TV show.
What do they do? They make cool diesel trucks, diesel off-road vehicles and stuff like that. That’s a really cool show on TV.
Do you have a truck yourself? No, I don’t. I’ve got a little car. I want a truck though.
One day. Yeah!
What about favorite band or singer? I don’t have one, honestly. I really don’t listen to music that much.
So do you like silence beforehand. Do you walk around with the headphones while you are waiting for your match? I kinda like silence. I prefer silence actually.
Who’s your favorite teacher? Probably Mr. Bjork. I’ve had him as a coach and now a teacher. He knows what kids are going through with all the stress of all these tests and everything like that. He’s probably my favorite teacher.
