Sarah Moffett is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther girls’ basketball team.
Moffett has started for the Panthers for the last three years and is currently second on the team in points and the leader in rebounds.
Moffett, who is a multi-sport athlete at MPCHS, met with The News on Monday before practice. The questions are in bold with her answers following.
Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Actually, I was born in Texas, raised in Grapevine until I was like three and then I moved here when I was five. So since then, yes.
Did you inherit any of the Texas drawl? When I was young I did have like a little “ya’ll” when I talked. Not too much longer after I moved though.
How long have you been playing basketball? I don’t even remember. Probably since fourth-grade. Maybe before that.
You’re a senior, have you figured out your plans for after high school yet? I’m still working. I’m going to play basketball in college for sure. I’m still deciding where to go but I’m planning on becoming a dentist, so I would want to go into my undergrad in biology and then go somewhere and get my major in dentistry.
Did you have trouble figuring out which sport you wanted to play since there are a few that you are probably skilled enough to play in college? My dad always wanted me to play softball. I liked it for a little while and then we got into high school and I just really took a liking to basketball, I think. One year I was just like, “I like basketball more.”
When you are not at school or practice, what could you be found doing? Watching Netflix, eating food, hanging out with my friends, whatever.
Word or phrase that Coach Maynard tells you the most during practice? My favorite that he says would be, “turn and burn” whenever we’re running.
“Turn and burn?” Yeah, I think I’m the only one who notices that because I asked everyone and they’re like, “I’ve never heard him say that.”
Now, when we did Brianna Shelman’s Panther Profile, she said that if Coach Maynard had a mute button, he’d use it on you. Do you concur, are you the loud one? No! I don’t know why she said that. I already told her, I said “If I get that question, I’m putting the mute button on you!”
What is the mood in the locker room like right before you guys go out? Is there warm up music, are you guys talking or are you guys quiet? Warm up music and we’re loud. We dance, we yell. Anything we can do to just get pumped up for the game pretty much.
What kind of music do you guys listen to? A lot of hip-hop, rap.
Are you down with the hip-hop or are you more country? During basketball season I definitely like hip-hop because everyone likes it, but any other time I like country.
What do you like better, playing at home or playing on the road? Home. Definitely home, so you can just go home and just do whatever you want afterwards instead of having a long bus ride from wherever.
You play a lot of sports, but if you had to choose between one you aren’t involved in, what would you go out for? Golf probably. I know (Coach Jim Kelly) pretty well. I’ve known him since I was a kid and he coached my dad in basketball.
Do you have any superstitions? During the National Anthem I like to pray. I do it every game. Kind of a superstition I guess.
When you are on those long bus rides, who’s your favorite teammate to sit by? Bailey (Johnson) because she is just so much fun. She’s always funny and we’re always laughing together, I swear.
Do you have a favorite movie or TV show? I watch so many shows, I don’t think I could choose one. Probably “Friends” if I had to say.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Bora Bora. It’s so expensive but it’s so gorgeous. I love the beach and the water is so clear and all that, it looks gorgeous.
Favorite cell phone app? Snapchat, I use it all the time.
If you could spend the day with one celebrity for a whole day, who would you choose? Oh my, I have no idea…oh! Anthony Rizzo, definitely.
That’s a great one. I love him.
What would you and Anthony Rizzo do? I don’t know, go play some baseball.
Out of all the people I’ve asked that question, that was the best answer. Now what if you could pick a superpower to have for the rest of your life? Flying, definitely. I think it’s so cool.
I guess you could fly to Bora Bora then, right? Yeah, definitely. Free trip, right?
Who is your favorite teacher? Mrs. Anderson, she’s so nice.
Are you a math person? No, definitely not, but she makes it a little bit better!
Alright and last thing, do you have any shout outs? Shout out to everyone who comes and supports the girls. We couldn’t do it without all of you.
