Panther softball team divides pair with state-ranked foe
BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant and West Burlington-Burlington Notre Dame softball teams split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday night.
The hosts took a narrow 5-4 win in the first game behind the 10-strikeout pitching of Kori Mesecher.
The Panthers did reach Mesecher for eight hits, including a home run, single and three RBIs from Bailey Johnson. Leslie Taylor added a pair of singles.
Shelby Allender took the mound loss for the Panthers.
A seven-run second inning was key for the Panthers in the second game. Mt. Pleasant, now 15-17 on the season, received a strong effort from junior Jena Stukerjurgen on the mound. The junior right-hander allowed the Class 1A 11th-ranked team just five hits.
Offensively, Allender had three hits and the same number of RBIs. Cali Liechty also had three hits, good for three Panther runs.
Taylor, Stukerjurgen and Johnson each had two hits with Stukerjurgen bagging a double to go with a single. Stukerjurgen drove in three runs and Taylor had two runs batted in.
