The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team has won 15 duals in one season for the first time in school history.
It wasn’t easy for an MPCHS team still battling through injuries. The Panthers started Thursday night’s triangular with a 73-0 shutout loss to a stacked North Scott team, but battled back for a 40-37 win over Muscatine to set the new school record for wins in a year.
It was a rough first meet for the Panthers as North Scott flexed their muscle to open up the triangular.
The Lancers swept the matches, picking up 10 pins along the way. James DeMeyer (152 lbs.) and Corbin Broeker (106 lbs.) came the closest to stopping the sweep, but they were unable to pull off wins in their respective matches.
After falling to North Scott themselves, Muscatine won the first four matches against Mt. Pleasant to jump out to a 19-0 lead, but the Panthers lost just three matches the rest of the way.
In a six-match stretch from 160 lbs. to 101 lbs., where each matchup ended in a pin, Mt. Pleasant had four. Tyler Davis (160 lbs.), Zach Beason (182 lbs.), Dalton Bass (195 lbs.) and Broeker all picked up pins to help make it 31-30 Muskies with three matches to go.
Brayden Ackles won by major decision at 113 lbs., and Tyler Raub won by forfeit at 120 lbs., to clinch the match for the Panthers. Jamie Johannes lost the last scheduled match, at 126 lbs., by pinfall, but MPCHS still escaped with the three-point win.
After the triangular, Panther coach Anthony Blint said the team needs to be sharper if they are going to make any noise in the postseason.
“It will feel a lot cooler tomorrow, next week or something,” Blint said. “The 15th win came tonight but it wasn’t pretty.”
The Panthers are scheduled to compete at the regional duals tournament against Johnston in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m., but Coach Blint says the main focus is the district tournament, at home, three days later.
“We’re going to treat next Wednesday like it’s not even a dual,” Blint said. “We’ve got some guys banged up (so) we’re going to concentrate on Saturday.”
