Panthers compete in co-ed state tournament
PELLA — Four Mt. Pleasant golfers competed in the state co-ed tournament on Tuesday at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella.
Kyle Kauffman teamed up with Haley Booton and Kiley Miller golfed with Courtney Mabeus to compete against 60 other Class 2A teams from across the state.
Kauffman and Booton finished in a tie for 23rd place, scoring 94 on the par-72 course. Miller and Mabeus shot a 100 to finish in a tie for 32nd.
The medalist team was from Ankeny; they shot a 77.
Each Iowa school can take up to two teams to the tournament; each team has to have one boy and one girls from the school golf teams, and must be taken to the tournament by either the boys’ or girls’ coach.
“They (the four Panthers who went to the tournament) got together beforehand and talked about it, then came to me,” Mt. Pleasant girls’ golf coach Jim Kelly said. “I’ve taken a number of teams over the past few years.”
In the tournament, the two-person teams alternated shots, with the girl teeing off on the even-numbered holes and the boy teeing off on the odd-numbered holes.
“I really like the format — it’s kind of a relaxing atmosphere for the kids to play together like that,” Kelly said.
The tournament started on time (9 a.m.), despite pouring rain that lasted for the first eight holes. After the rain stopped, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped for the remaining holes.
“It was a really difficult day to play,” Kelly said. “Considering the weather situation, I thought we did pretty well.”
