Panthers defeat Ft. Madison
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ tennis team swept its conference rival, Ft. Madison, on Monday, winning all nine matches against the Bloodhounds. The boys’ team also defeated Ft. Madison, taking a 6-3 victory on the courts at East Lake Park.
The girls remain undefeated on the season at 3-0, and they are 2-0 in the Southeast Conference.
Taylor Beatty won her singles match at Ft. Madison by a score of 8-0. The Panthers also got wins from Shelby Barton (8-2), Tasha Glover (8-4), Becca Lehman (8-2), Emily Hatfield (8-1) and Ashley Whaley (8-1). It was the first career varsity win for Whaley.
In doubles, Beatty and Glover won their match by a score of 8-1, and the other pairs also claimed victory. Barton and Lehman won 8-3, while Hatfield and Crile shut out their opponents, 8-0.
In the boys’ meet, the Panthers got singles wins from Zach Schmitz (8-1), Matt Zihlman (8-5), Tyler Pace (8-3) and Blake Wickham (8-1).
Two of the Panther pairs also got doubles wins. Chase Higginbotham and Schmitz defeated their Ft. Madison opponents by a score of 8-1, while Zihlman and Pace got an 8-5 win.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team upped its record to 3-1 on the season with the win, and they are 2-0 in the SEC.
The teams have some time off before their next matches. The girls play at the Ft. Madison Invite on Saturday. The boys don’t take to the courts again until Monday, April 15, when they travel to Keokuk. The girls host Keokuk on Monday.
