Panthers run away with team title

BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant’s Dustin Amos soared to a first-place finish in the high jump at yesterday’s Carl C. Johannsen Relays in Burlington, earning one of six gold medals for the Panther team that took the varsity title with 169 points in the four-team field.

The Panthers beat out conference rival Ft. Madison by a comfortable margin in the team standings, as the Bloodhounds were second with a score of 143. The host team was third (132) and Keokuk tallied 122 points.

Amos cleared 6-3 in the high jump, three inches higher than his previous season best.

The high jump was one of three top finishes in field events for Mt. Pleasant, and Ben Canby had the other two.

Canby went 50-8 1/4 in shot put and hurled the discus 155-0 1/2 for the crown in both events.

On the track, the shuttle hurdle team of Cole Phillips, Zach Mulford, Trey Magnani and Spencer White posted a time of 1:00.21 for the win, and White also won the individual 110-meter high hurdles title with a time of 14.89 seconds.

White, Phillips and Magnani teamed up with Justin Chalupa for a victory in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.84 seconds.
