Panthers run away with win at Mid-Prairie Hawk Co-Ed Relays
WELLMAN — The Mt. Pleasant boys’ track and field team walked away with a big win after the Mid-Prairie Hawk Co-Ed Relays on Tuesday in Wellman.
The Panthers racked up 135 points as a team, more than 60 points ahead of their nearest competitor. Host Mid-Prairie and Williamsburg each scored 74 points to tie for second.
The Panthers won six events on the night and placed in the top three 15 times.
Justin Dunn and Tommy Thorne were two-time individual gold medal winners, with Dunn taking the title in both the shot put and discus and Thorne crossing the line first in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter low hurdles.
Thorne was also part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team. The Panthers’ final first-place finish came from Logan Mulford in the high jump.
Field events were once again a strong suit for the Panthers.
Dunn threw 154-2 to win the discus and 51-2 to win the shot put, and his closest competition in both events was teammate Emmett Wester.
Wester took home a pair of silver medals with a throw of 143-3 in the discus and 45-10 in the shot put.
Mulford’s jump of 6-0 earned him the win in high jump, and Zach Mulford took third in the event with a jump of 5-4.
On the track, Thorne finished the 110 hurdles in 15.36 seconds. He was followed across the line by teammate Cole Phillips, who took second with a time of 15.70.
Thorne won the 400 hurdles in a time of 55.30 seconds, more than four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Jacob Hennigan from Washington.
The Panthers put an exclamation point on their team win at the meet with a narrow victory in the final event of the night, the 4x400-meter relay.
The team of Trey Magnani, Spencer White, Blake Knudsen and Thorne won with a time of 3:38.19, just over a second ahead of Washington.
The Panthers had a second-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay and in the distance medley relay.
The team of Paul Holdefer, Knudsen, White and Cameron Frank finished the 4x200 in 1:36.49, and the distance medley team of Phillips, Magnani, Tony Cristoforo and Logan Mulford finished in 3:56.63.
The Panthers also had a pair of third-place finishes in the relays.
The 4x800 team of Logan Mulford, Clayle Franklin, Ian Franzen and Drew Perry crossed the line in 8:53.13 for a bronze medal, and the 4x100 team of Holdefer, White, Phillips and Frank finished in 45.59 seconds, behind only the teams from Mid-Prairie and Columbus.
Mt. Pleasant also got an individual third-place finish from Holdefer in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90 seconds.
In fourth place for the Panthers were Frank in the 400-meter dash (24.57 seconds) and Perry in the mile run (4:57.03).
Magnani placed fifth for Mt. Pleasant in the open 400 with a time of 55.95 seconds.
Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Eddyville tonight (Thursday). They begin competition at 5 p.m.
