Phomsouvandara advances to districts
MORAVIA — The Mt. Pleasant boys’ golf team competed Friday at its sectional meet at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake in Moravia, and the Panthers’ Jordon Phomsouvandara’s score of 76 earned him a trip to the district tournament this weekend.
Phomsouvandara shot his best score of the season at the postseason tournament, leading the Panthers for the first time.
He shot two nine-hole rounds of 38, scoring under 40 for the first time this year.
The medalist at the meet was the defending state champion. Alex Moorman, a sophomore from Centerville, shot a 68 on the par-72 course.
Centerville’s Blake Dabney was the runner up at 75, followed by Fairfield’s Matt Carr and Phomsouvandara, each of whom shot 76.
Carr won the one-hole playoff for third place, and Phomsouvandara finished fourth. The top four individuals qualify for districts.
The top two teams also qualify — host team Centerville won the tournament with a score of 302, and Fairfield was second at 312.
Mt. Pleasant scored 319 for third place.
Typically, the third place team would also advance to the district tournament when the host team places in the top two, but Mt. Pleasant’s sectional had an unusual situation: even though Centerville does spend some practice time at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake, that is not their home course.
Therefore, the Panthers fell just short of advancing as a team.
Kiley Miller had the second-best score for the Panthers with a 79. He was followed by Quinn Daniel (82), Kyle Kauffman (82), Jacob Smith (91) and Colin Baccam (92).
As a team, the Panthers finished ahead of Oskaloosa (331), Keokuk (344), Albia (353), Ft. Madison (359) and Chariton (371).
Phomsouvandara will golf at the district tournament on Friday at 10 p.m. at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg.
