Reader says vote not based on dress code
To the editor:
We find it unfortunate that Dr. Lonny Morrow takes time in a public forum to challenge the validity of the teachers’ sincere effort to open a dialogue. At the July school board meeting, the teachers and para-educators delivered a 99 to 3 vote of no-confidence to the current superintendent Mike Wells.
We would like to believe this resounding rebuke of Mike Wells would evoke a genuine concern to our school board and community. As far as we can determine, a no-confidence vote has never happened in the history of the Mt. Pleasant School system.
Instead, Dr. Lonny Morrow and the superintendent are trying to make this lack of confidence appear to be about attendance and dress code. Yet, never once throughout the teachers’ comments at the board meeting were those issues even mentioned. Their concerns were about fear, intimidation and the erratic leadership demonstrated by Superintendent Mike Wells.
Trying to give the new superintendent all the credit for test score data that teachers had been involved in elevating long before his arrival just further illustrates the board’s lack of compassion and acceptance of the situation as it has been revealed to them.
We would hope that the board would be spending this time investigating the reality of what is driving the vote of no-confidence, instead of simply trying to justify its bad hire.
